Chief Don Stats is proud to share that a member of the North Reading Fire Department saved a person’s life while off-duty last weekend.

On Saturday, April 23, Firefighter Jon Burt was dining at LongHorn Steakhouse in Reading with his family when a person at a nearby table showed signs consistent with choking.

Firefighter Burt, who also is trained as a paramedic, acted quickly and performed the Heimlich Maneuver. Firefighter Burt successfully freed the obstruction from the person’s airway before Reading Public Safety officials arrived on scene.

Chief Stats has issued a letter of commendation to Firefighter Burt.

“Jon’s training and years of experience undoubtedly prepared him for this moment,” Chief Stats said. “What cannot be understated is his quick action and decision-making abilities, which immediately relieved danger and helped save a person’s life. The Town of North Reading is fortunate to have Jon serving us.”
