S.A.F.E. Young Hero Award

The North Reading Fire Department would like to take this opportunity to recognize Jolie Griggs, an 8 year old student, at the time of the incident, of the Batchelder School, who, in December of 2020, recognized that a family member was having a medical emergency and called 9-1-1 to request help.

Jolie was able to calmly let the call-takers of both the North Reading Fire and Police departments know that her family member was not responding to her as they had moments before and she believed they needed help.

At that point the Fire Department call-taker, Firefighter/Paramedic Jon Burt worked with Jolie to get more pointed information, which she as able to provide clearly, and stayed on the call with Jolie until Fire and Police arrived on-scene.

This is a great example and success story of the work the North Reading Fire Department’s S.A.F.E. program and educators perform annually, in conjunction with and support of the North Reading Public School system, in preparing young people to know what to do in emergency situations, act, and make a difference.
